The
Automobile Skills module
at the Refugee Center

The
driving simulator is a major attraction at the Refugee Center.
In today's
society, the ability to drive and own a car is essential to holding
a good job with room for advancement. Helping refugees learn to
drive and become ready to buy a car is a high priority at the Refugee
Development Center.
The Refugee
Center's state-of-the-art driving simulator has three 19-inch computer
screens that give refugees 120-degree vision as they learn to drive.
The simulator can take a trip on city streets or freeways, in dry or
wet weather, and can even teach someone to drive a stick shift.
In addition to practice
on the driving simulator, the Automobile Education module includes:
- Learning to drive:
the rules of the road
- Buying a car
- Finances: it's
not just the car payments!
- Car repair and
maintenance
- Automobile Insurance
- Legal issues
related to owning a car
Different lessons are
available on videotape, CD-ROM, the Internet, and in print, with as
many lessons as possible in the language of the refugee.
The Center tracks the
progress of each refugee, giving them the ability to work through the
lessons at their own pace.
